Optical Communications

CIE525

Description

This course introduces the fundamental principles and technologies of optical communication systems. Topics include optical fibers, multimode and single-mode optical fibers, attenuation and dispersion mechanisms, semiconductor optical sources, including light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs), and semiconductor photodetectors, including photodiodes, PIN photodiodes, and avalanche photodiodes (APDs). The course also covers passive optical components such as optical filters, diffraction gratings, optical couplers, and wavelength-selective devices; optical signal modulation, noise and detection techniques; optical access and distribution networks; and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM). Emphasis is placed on the analysis, design, and performance evaluation of modern fiber-optic communication systems.
