This theoretical and practical course explores the origins and development of decorative arts and ornamental design throughout the history of civilization. It introduces the concept of ornament and decorative motifs, tracing their evolution across the major artistic traditions of Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, the Islamic world, and other Eastern civilizations. The course examines the distinctive characteristics, aesthetic principles, and symbolic meanings of ornamental design within each historical period, with particular emphasis on the richness and diversity of Islamic ornamentation and its enduring influence on Western art and design. Through analytical studies and practical studio projects, students develop original decorative compositions using a variety of techniques, materials, and contemporary design approaches while drawing inspiration from historical decorative traditions.
