Description
This course provides a comprehensive survey of the history and evolution of decorative arts and interior design, introducing the concept, scope, and significance of interior design as a professional discipline. The course traces the development of interior design from the civilizations of the Ancient World, including Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece, through the Roman, Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance periods, and continues to examine the principal artistic movements and design trends of the late twentieth century. It also explores the characteristics of interior architecture and interior design during the Islamic periods, as well as the development of interior design in North America and the Far East, highlighting the works of influential contemporary architects and designers. Through historical and analytical studies, students examine the evolution of design principles and styles, their relationship to social, economic, cultural, and environmental contexts, and the development of interior finishing materials for floors, walls, and ceilings, together with the decorative elements and design features that characterize different historical periods.
