Description
This theoretical course examines the history of Arab art before Islam, with particular emphasis on the artistic heritage of ancient Yemen, the Nabataean civilization, and Palmyrene art. It also provides an introduction to the origins of Islamic art, its cultural and intellectual foundations, and its principal sources of inspiration. The course explores the philosophical background and aesthetic values of Islamic art, the major historical periods of Islamic artistic development, and the distinctive characteristics of Islamic visual and applied arts. Particular emphasis is placed on the spiritual dimension of Islamic art, Islamic ornamentation and its various forms, the unity of Islamic artistic expression, and the role of abstraction and decorative arts in shaping Islamic aesthetics and influencing the artistic traditions of other civilizations.
